Work things that make me feel good
Aug. 14th, 2007 01:47 pmI really like writing a good article for our knowledgebase. Especially when I can lay out, step by step, how to troubleshoot a particular type of issue, or fix something that's not so intuitive.
Management keeps pushing us to write more knowledgebase articles, and some of my colleagues respond to this by throwing together an article that's basically a transcription of a page in one of the manuals. And there's a place for that type of article; after all manuals can be intimidating and some users never look at them. But it's boring to just transcribe info from manuals to the knowledgebase. I would much rather write something that will help people who have already read the manual and not found what they needed. I may not write as many articles as some of my colleagues, but I write really good ones.
I have to laugh when I am looking for a solution to something, and I turn up a knowledgebase article that I myself wrote in the dim past, and I can't remember a thing about it, but by following my own steps I solve the problem!

I do that quite frequently too. :) Unfortunately I don't really document as often as I should - a universal affliction in the IT industry? ;)
