So what with being sick, and not wanting to go passing out germs to other people, I've been hanging out at home here this weekend, and going through some sewing stuff. Yesterday I went through patterns, and today I am contemplating some of my fabric stash. I have this lovely piece of silk, I've been hoarding it for years, and I just can't decide what to do with it.

It's 45" wide and I have 3 yards of it. I actually made this into a skirt, of sorts, but I couldn't quite commit to it, so I didn't cut it; I just put an elastic waistband in it, and folded a lot of fabric into the hem. I wore it once or twice but it was just wrong like this, so I picked it all out and it's now just yard goods again.
I'd like it to be a dress, but with the small amount, there aren't a lot of choices. Here's one I found in my pattern stash that I think might work:

It calls for 3 3/8 yards, but I laid out these pattern pieces and I could make this work. However I think this fabric might be too loudly diagonal, for something like this. With the large pattern, maybe it should be something more chopped up, where the diagonal won't be so obvious.
Perhaps something like this? The one on the left:

This is a style that's very fashionable right now, the stores are full of these things. I've tried them on and they look fine on me, but I'm just not crazy about them. Also, what would I wear this top with? This fabric is too beautiful to waste as a topper for a pair of jeans, but what skirt does it go with? Also, this style has been so dominant lately, that I'm afraid everyone will hate it in five years.
I'd rather make it into a dress. But what dress? Argh!
I might have to just give in and make the dress above, and hope that the diagonal doesn't kill it too badly. I guess I could rotate one half of the front to at least make it symmetrical. Maybe I can make a shorter dress, with more gathers? I just can't decide.
This is why this lovely fabric has been in the closet for so many years.

Date: 2007-08-06 04:25 am (UTC)I agree with your comments about the first dress. It probably would be cutting it verrry close. I think there's too much color/pattern for it, and the fabric lends itself to a more flowing style.
The second dress I like in general, but I might not recommend it for this fabric, and my designer side is picturing other styles for you.
I'll try to remember to bring in some top/skirt dress pattern options of my large stash Tues. and you can see if something catches your eye.
I also have untouched gorgeous pieces of fabric -- some only 1 yard -- that I haven't made a commitment to a specific pattern. Some days I think I'll just make the most wonderful collection of pillows. lol
