I just talked to Yet Another Electrician. This one says he will come here on Tuesday morning and do my estimate and then just begin the work on the spot if I like. He asked me a bunch of questions on the phone and said he thought it would probably cost about $1200 to $1400. I have no idea if that's high or low but if he really truly shows up and is willing to do the work right then, I'll gladly pay it.

If he's any good let me know, I've also been looking for someone to wire up our basement.
(And having the same problems, it dosen't seem like no one wants to do work for homeowners...)

Thanks!

That sounds good, I'll take you up on both offers.
Although I don't know how much time I'll have for stringing outlets among the fifty other things I'm supposed to be doing...

$1200 is not that high for completely replacing a wiring box. It includes the box, all of those individual breakers (which cost about $25 each), and the tedious task of sorting out the box of spaghetti and wiring it all up correctly.

You pay extra for 'correctly'. A monkey could do it wrong. :-)

Do make sure that he's trackable, so that if there are problems, you can find him again. But I doubt there will be problems.
