Promoting SF fandom in my own small way

During my last support call of the day, I spoke to Tom, a friendly customer I have spoken to many times before. As I was finishing up solving his issue, I said, "Now I can go away on vacation with a clear conscience, because I will have closed your case."

He said "I hope you are going someplace good!"

I told him I was going to a science fiction convention. He responded very enthusiastically to this, he said he'd always wanted to go to a science fiction convention but they're all too far away. He said he just loves science fiction, reads it all the time.

I looked at the case tracking system and saw that he is in Austin, TX. So I directed him to ArmadilloCon. He simply must go, I told him. Later I looked up their website and emailed it to him.

I'm going to keep after him about it too. I'm sure I will talk to him again between now and August.

I'm going to go evangelize for SF cons some more, tomorrow night. The Detroit Symphony is performing the music of Star Wars. They've been promoting this as a fun concert that the audience should dress in costume for, etc. Apparently the tickets have gone off like hotcakes, even for the Thursday night show. They're letting us set up a table in the lobby and push convention flyers on people. The timing is good, since the con is this weekend, just up the road in Troy. :-)

Good for you. The first con comm meeting for Armadillocon is this saturday. I am not going, but I am going to the World Fantasy con comm meeting (World Fantasy is in Austin this November also sponsored by FACT).

You could also send him to ApolloCon, in Houston. Less than three hours away, different in style (Armadillocon is literary SF, ApolloCon is general SF/F/H and more like 'Fusion than Armadillocon is), and also being held in June, so it will happen sooner!!

I find myself suggesting the convention to random people. I saw a girl reading a Harry Potter book in Buddy's Pizza last week. She was there with her parents. We started talking, and I suggested they check out the convention. They're interested. :)
