I haven’t posted in ages because I have been incredibly busy. Every weekday, we have crews here. Sometimes three or four crews at once. Then on the weekends we spend time with my folks. My mom is more confused than ever.

But here is where it stands:

Our SIPs were delivered the second week of September and went up right away. The carpenter we hired to put them up, Greg, is great. He has agreed to stay on and do more parts of the project. Suddenly things are ticking along really well. Greg also turns out to have tons of friends in common with us. I can’t believe we didn’t already know him.

Greg has completed the panels, the windows, the interior framing and enough trim for the roof to go on. He has two younger guys on his crew and it’s a joy to eavesdrop as he teaches them how to do things right, no shortcuts here! They ride our ebikes to get lunch. One day, one of them stopped by on the weekend to introduce his fiancé to us. Greg also has a partner, MJ, who is in a very similar situation with elder care stuff. It’s like an accidental support group. I don’t just like them as professionals, I like them as people, and I hope we will continue hanging out with them after this is done.

Zoning requires a fire rated wall on the side towards the garage. No one knew for sure what the county building inspector was going to expect for this. And they don’t answer phone calls. So we came up with a clever plan. One of the 21 different inspections we have to collect passes on, is “insulation”. This is a dumb one, since we have SIPs. There’s nothing to look at and it would normally just get tacked on to some other inspection. But we requested they schedule it, and when the inspector arrived for it, we pounced on him and got him to tell us what he wanted for a fire rated wall. This worked, he told us and we are doing it. Learning to work the system!

The plumber and the electrician were here most of the week. The plumber passed his inspection already. The electrician didn’t realize what a clusterfck it is at the county building department, and didn’t request his inspections early, so we are waiting on that and it’s holding up the drywall.

After not returning my calls all week, last Thursday at around 6pm the roofers turned up without warning, and within 24 hours the roof was done. It looks good.

The landscapers started work this week and have been moving a lot of dirt and rocks.

Greg has agreed to put up the siding and do the tiling. We have painters, drywallers, and trim carpenters lined up. The kitchen cabinets will arrive next week and it’s possible we could even be ready for them.

I am scurrying to finalize selections for tile, light fixtures, and plumbing fixtures.

We may yet get it done before the snow flies.

How exciting, and fortunate you found great contractor folks! Are you documenting this build with photos somewhere?
