I have been admonished that my journal needs more updates, so here goes. This happened a couple weeks ago.

I posted a while back about the Bolt battery recall. Here is what is happening with that. Chevy has this thing called the EV Concierge. It is low level phone support, basically. They must have hired a whole lot of people, because their stated goal is to call every Bolt owner, every week, to keep us posted on the battery recall. As you can imagine, this is a high turnover job. Every couple of weeks I have a new concierge assigned to my case. They are not particularly well informed.

The concierge I had in December kept insisting I needed to call the dealer to schedule my battery replacement. I kept telling her my car is not eligible yet but she insisted it was. GM has a website where you can enter the VIN and check, and I am checking it, so I knew my status was still “INCOMPLETE - REMEDY NOT YET AVAILABLE”. But this concierge was very insistent and after three weeks she still hadn’t figured it out. Idiots have their own armor. Anyways, I got tired of arguing so I agreed to call the dealer. I figured the dealer would just say no, I could relay that to the concierge, and get it through her thick skull.

So, I called the dealer. As expected, there was no battery available for me yet. No harm no foul, I wasn’t expecting one. But as a sop, the dealer offered to do my floor mat recall. Yes, there is a second recall, for floor mats. I said sure, order me a new floor mat and let me know when I can pick it up. She said she has to make me a service appointment, she can’t just order it. I said I am in no rush, let’s wait till after the holidays. We scheduled it for Jan 3 at 12:15.

On Jan 3 at 12:15, I pulled into the fancy drive thru garage for dealer service. I left my walker at home since I did not expect to leave the car. But the porter (an unmasked teenager) insisted I must leave the car. I looked at the epoxied floor cover in ice chunks. I looked through the plate window at the row of unmasked service writers. And I refused to go in. I made the porter bring me a chair and I sat next to the car.

Fifteen minutes later the porter came back with another unmasked kid, who took my floor mat out and brought it over to me, and started telling me why it is recalled. I said I knew that, and where is the new one?

He said there wasn’t one. I was flabbergasted. I said, you guys made me get an appointment, and then risk my life twice over (hobbling across this ice, dealing with your unmasked staff) just so I could have my floor mat confiscated? I never even asked for any of this! You guys are the ones who prompted me to all this. You could have just left me alone!

I made him put my floor mat back in the car and I left. I am still steamed.

And that idiot concierge never called back so I could say “I told you so”. My next call was from a new concierge. But at least the new one knows my battery is not yet available.

Auto dealerships in general and GM AfterCare in particular are not noteworthy for hiring people with anything active from the eyebrows up.

(P.S. Lord save me from anything requiring the intervention of a "concierge"...)
