Microburst and Piaggio MP3

elizillaA teeny tiny storm tore through here just after 5pm yesterday. It started with sudden extremely heavy rain, like a thousand faucets turned on. Then the wind kicked up and suddenly that heavy rain was horizontal. Then I started to hear trees breaking. A LOT of trees. Like toothpicks snapping. People on the sidewalk started screaming. All of this happened in about 30 seconds. I thought a tornado was on us and I should probably go to the basement, but I move slowly. By the time I got out of my chair it was already stopping. The house did not shake and the power did not flicker. I don't think anyone was hit by the falling trees, since no ambulances came. The storm ended as quickly as it came.
By 6pm when I got out of work, it was dry enough to keep the appointment I had made to see a Piaggio MP3 scooter from Craigslist. On the way out the neighborhood we stared at the collection of downed trees in the park next to the library. Destruction!
The scooter was in Parma, about 40 miles west of here. We drove through another mini thunderstorm on the way, but it wasn't as dramatic. Decided that it would NOT be possible for me to stop and go without putting my feet down, so we did not buy the scooter. It got dark while we were talking to the seller. On the way home, the lightning show was amazing.
Sat what you will about government but my local city is on the ball. The tree crews were on our street before 8am this morning, cleaning up the mess. It's still pretty untidy at the edge of the park where the trees got ripped up, but the streets and sidewalks are clear now, nothing is blocking traffic or threatening to fall on people.
Steve reports that the road works project on Central street is going gangbusters today. Can't see it from the house and can't hear it from my office, though I can hear it from my bed in the morning before I get up. Steve says they have cement trucks lined up and they're pouring the curbs very quickly at one end of the street. But at the other end of the street they're dealing with some subsidence, perhaps because of the heavy storms hitting while the road surface was off.
