Big times in a small town

I got 21 laps today, and afterward I was still able to go grocery shopping. But I'm tired; I probably should have either stopped sooner or skipped the shopping. My left foot is even less willing than usual right now.

The Relay For Life is on in town today and there's a band playing which I can hear from the house. As the sun has sunk lower, it has cooled off enough to go out again, so I scootered down there and bobbed around a bit, just checking out the crowd. I love how much stuff goes on here in summer. There are live bands every Friday even when we don't have an event, but there are a number of events like this every summer as well. It's never huge, but it's lively.

I actually own something kinda like that, for motorcycling in hot weather. It's a vest made of some high tech textile that sucks up a lot of water and holds it well enough that it barely drips - but the water evaporates and this keeps the wearer cooler. It fits comfortably under my leathers and doesn't soak them, and when I am not wearing it, it is light and packs small. You recharge it by soaking it in a ziplock bag of ice water. It takes about 30 mins to absorb the max water, so the trick is to soak it during meals.

It works pretty well, but my gripe is this: It takes days to dry out completely enough to be stored in a sealed container without getting disgusting. So when you are touring, once you have wet it, it's a nuisance to carry on the days that are NOT hot enough to wear it. The one in your link wouldn't have this drawback but it looks heavier and bulkier.

I hadn't considered wearing it around town. Maybe I should try it. I wonder where I put it?

Yeah, that sounds like an evaporative cooling vest, it's cheap and easy but not very clever or user friendly... here's a manufacturers video explaining how the vest linked to works...

It might be worth trying the one you already have just to prove out whether the concept works for you though...
