Jan. 24th, 2005 09:20 pmAfter making the nice new purple skirt last Friday, and helping
pi3832 make his cloak, I feel inspired to make things.
xtatic1 was talking about goth outfits over the weekend, and I have been trying to convince her to sew with me this year anyway, so I went surfing for some tempting patterns. Here's what I found.
It would be fun to make this entirely in black, and use about ten different textures, from satin to sheers to textured and cut pile velvets, with black braid trim, satin ribbons, fringe, and maybe some beads. Maybe a few deep rich purple or forest green velvety bits, if we can find some that are so dark they're almost black. Unfortunately this would probably be a bit too complex for an inexperienced creator. Still, it could be really cool. I would just take this top, and invent something for a skirt, whatever she likes.

The next two are less difficult and either of them could support the same complex and textured treatment I suggested for the one above. But they don't show as much shoulder, and she has good shoulders, she should show them off.

Here's something less ornate but still quite interesting. It would be cool to use a black with some shiny/metallic/sparkly texture for the bottom layer (shown in pink in the photo) and a deep matte black texture on top. This one would be time consuming to make, all that hemming would take forever.

Of course, what do I know? I've never done the goth thing. And I can never find just the right fabrics to create the things I see in my mind's eye. It requires a trip to the fabric store, and much wandering back and forth to find inspiring fabric and then find a pattern that goes with it.
So,
xtatic1, do any of these tempt you?

Date: 2005-01-25 09:38 pm (UTC)The first seems like what would work best on her, especially as your describe it, with black on black. Perhaps one of those color-changing fabrics, if they make one that goes from black to midnight blue or somesuch. Some black pleather could work, too.
The last one doesn't really do much for me. It seems too Fredrick's of Holloywood or something. It bespeaks '80s trailer park to me.
But what do I know?--I'm just a guy, and not even a gay one.

Date: 2005-01-25 10:08 pm (UTC)As for that last one, I think it's the sheer red they chose, that gives it the Frederick's effect. See-through red fabric is just way too popular a look for tacky valentines day lingerie and porn store items.
When I was first in fandom I made a dress that had two layers. The top layer was a black lace with green glitter. I put that on top of a metallic purplish pink fabric. It was extremely flashy but I liked the effect a lot! This pattern would work well with similar color effects although those particular fabrics wouldn't have worked because they didn't have the right texture.
It's amazing how different the same pattern can look, if you make different fabric choices. I ordered this pattern and I may make it for myself if I can find the right fabrics.
