Dec. 21st, 2003 09:59 pmWent to Sharon's party last night. Michael actually joined me there. I was kind of surprised; it's hard to get him out of the house for anything that does not involve gaming, these days.
He likes Sharon's new upstairs. He thinks it would be nice to have a bathroom large enough to host a party in. Of course I immediately started tossing out ideas for shoehorning a bathroom like that into our existing house, like I always do. He followed me down that imaginary path a little farther than he usually does. So when he then brought up his usual idea of building a dream house on a piece of land somewhere, I returned the courtesy and followed that imaginary path with him for a little while. We agreed that a new house should have lots of shop space, a larger library, and multiple fireplaces.
It's kind of funny how, when we talk about this kind of thing, he always wants to design a new house from the bottom up, and I want to install new features in our current house. I don't like urban sprawl or long commutes so I always resist the new house idea. He doesn't like the thought of living in a construction project, and he doesn't think it makes good economic sense to gut portions of a perfectly good house just to reconfigure them, so he always resists the idea of modifying our current house.
Maybe when our current house is paid for we'll make some changes. It might be possible to find a piece of land I wouldn't object to putting a new house on. Or just maybe someday he'll agree to more of my schemes for modifying this house. Some research into new construction might help us come to an agreement. A really good plan might persuade me to agree to do it his way, or a horrifying estimate of new construction costs might get him to agree to the remodeling idea. Who knows? Time enough for that sort of discussion, when this place is paid for.
I took a little motorcycle ride today. It was so sunny, and the roads had dried out, so I just had to get out. I didn't go very far, and I avoided the worst Christmas traffic areas, but it was still good to get out.
