Chuck Firment just called me. He's driving up Van Dyke, on his way to the BMW dealer. He says the Van Dyke Park Suites has a sign out front that says "Everything Must Go!"
Once they empty it, I wonder if they will fix it up? Or tear it down and replace with a shopping mall? Or just let the building rot?
My bet is on the shopping mall. That's a big piece of prime real estate.
Good thing Tammy and Anne moved us out. If I'd had my way we'd have stayed. I still worry about the new hotel, but one way or another we will manage.

Date: 2003-12-19 10:26 pm (UTC)It's too bad it's not being bought by another hotel chain. If they'd fix it up and get some new management in, I'd happily go back - the floor plan is so nice for ConFusion.
But yes, are very glad we jumped ship when we did, especially since appearing to have an alternative allowed us to get such a good deal out of the new hotel.
I wonder what they're selling? It's kind of tempting to go get a souvenir of our time there... But I can't really think of anything I'd want.

Date: 2003-12-20 03:22 pm (UTC)...wait. No, that wouldn't work.
But after buying what I wanted at the dealership I sat down and hung out with the staff for a while, long after they closed. Good conversation, fun talking and relaxing. Well, until I realized OH CRAP! PEOPLE ARE COMING OVER TO MY HOUSE TONIGHT!!! ...I hoped they weren't on their way. (Thankfully they hadn't left yet, and everything worked out great. The folks and a childhood/family friends came over for dinner and relaxation. Good fun.)
The parking lot of the Van Dyke was very empty. There appeared to be about three or so cars and I spotted what looked like a construction worker outside.
I'm with Tammy. It's a shame that nobody else bought the hotel and had it running right away. It's possible that someone HAS bought the hotel and they're gutting it before doing a complete renovation. I hope so. The place has character. What KIND of character I won't go into.

Date: 2003-12-20 04:09 pm (UTC)I remember the time Contraption went back to the Southfield Hilton/Convention Centre/Days Inn? that the rooms were totally made over. So here is hoping its a makeover.
It would be nice if the hotel were preserved as it is a great setup for conventions. However the location may not be the best to attract other convention's business.
