Went out to Nicola's Books this afternoon and bought a fun book. Tooth and Claw by Jo Walton. It's the novel Jane Austen would have written, if she had read too much Anne McCaffery when she was young and impressionable. I'm usually irked by modern authors who ape Jane Austen, but this book was good. The main characters were all dragons, but the storyline was so Jane Austen that the dragon stuff practically faded into the woodwork.

Lately it seems like the most inventive and interesting science fiction and fantasy is also chick lit. And the general fiction and literature areas are seeing a steady encroachment of science fiction and fantasy themes in books that don't get banished to the genre areas. I wonder if this is just part of the endless search for new plotlines, new themes, new ideas? Or is it a marketing decision by the book publishers? Is SF&F going to be absorbed into the mainstream?
