Spent most of my free time last week cleaning house, but still didn't have things in reasonable shape by the weekend. I had invited a dozen people from the motorcycle club to come over for turkey dinner, and it's been so long since we had company that I had let the house get into a terrible state. I took my first break on Friday night, and went shopping. While I was out spending too much money on groceries, [livejournal.com profile] pi3832 arrived. He got to witness the height of the cleaning frenzy, as I vacuumed obsessively, and he got me out of there for another short break from cleaning on Saturday morning, as we went shopping for the last few items we expected to need. We got a huge quantity of peanut oil for the deep fryer, and some interesting things to deep fry, ranging from traditional things like poppers or hush puppies from the freezers at GFS, to special Shrek edition twinkies with green filling. Whee!

Sabreman arrived Saturday, just as I had finally squeezed all the remaining household mess into the kitchen, and [livejournal.com profile] pi3832 was kind enough to keep him busy in the garage while I dealt with that. They took the carbs out of the Shiny Sabre and got them ready for Mr. Fiddlybits to work on.

Cleaning done, time to begin the cooking frenzy. [livejournal.com profile] pi3832 and Sabreman helped me make two kinds of cookies, and we relaxed with Chinese food for dinner. [livejournal.com profile] xtatic1 and P arrived shortly thereafter, on their way home from a wedding. They looked fabulous. We considered playing Settlers of Cataan but couldn't find it (turns out it was in the trunk of M's car) and none of us felt up for a new game or a complex game, so we just sat by the fire, ate cookies, and talked about people who weren't there.

The next day I tried to get up at a reasonable hour and get started. I fed Sabreman some oatmeal for breakfast while [livejournal.com profile] pi3832 and M still slept. Then he helped me put together a second breakfast, for more people, while [livejournal.com profile] pi3832 worked on setting up the deep fryer. [livejournal.com profile] xtatic1 and P arrived in time for coffee and more breakfast, which staggered into lunch as more and more people arrived, and the food started to come up. The next several hours were a blur of conversation, cooking, dodging around too many people in the kitchen, and eating until I could eat no more. By the time we got around to deep frying the Twinkies and candy bars, no one wanted to see any more food.

[livejournal.com profile] pi3832's first cajun-injected deep fried turkey was a huge success. I don't think I've had such a tasty turkey in years. By the time the second turkey (a plain version made from one of those breast-only packages) came up, no one wanted to eat any more turkey, so we set it aside. We didn't discover until after [livejournal.com profile] pi3832 had left and I was putting away the food, that this type of turkey doesn't cook as fast, and the center was still raw.

You can't deep fry the turkey with stuffing, so I made dressing in the oven. The recipe I made had cornbread and bacon in it; I chose it because it sounded like it might work well without the drippings. It didn't. No one liked it.

We discovered that battered and deep fried Milky Way and Snickers bars lose their structural integrity unless you start with frozen candy bars. The Twinkies worked pretty well, though to be honest the adults all found them revolting. The kids liked them, though. The most popular deep fry item, after the turkey, was the apple wedges.

Sixteen people showed up for this meal. To borrow a phrase from another group, it was "stupid amounts of food" in action. We could have fed twice as many people.

Mr. Fiddlybits did his thing with the baby Sabre carbs, and they are clean and bench synched and ready to go back in the bike. Maybe we'll sell it off yet.

Later in the evening, after almost everyone was gone, Elizabeth the Cat actually climbed up on the table and ate some turkey that had been left there. This never happens! She is such a picky eater. We let her do it. M says she is "old enough to wear purple," she's reached an age where the rules no longer apply. We are just happy that she wanted to eat.
