Election stuff
Nov. 2nd, 2004 12:01 amJust came home from several hours of tromping around in the rain putting up signs at polling places. I had two kinds of signs to put up:
Vote No on Proposal 2. This is a proposal to add an amendment to the state constitution that bans gay marriage. Even if you believe this is a good idea (which I don't) Michigan already has a couple of laws stating that marriage is between one man and one woman. Putting it in the constitution would be bad law, because the purpose of a constitution is to draw limits on the power of the state, not to do things to the people. Furthermore, the wording of the proposal is such that it would also ban things like civil unions or domestic partnerships, which are usually the options proposed by the people in the political center; it is a divisive proposal that is designed to force all the moderates out to the extremes. Also, by disallowing civil unions and domestic partnerships, it will take health insurance away from even more people (including children) in a time when there are already too many uninsured people. Do we really need to increase the number of uninsured people in this state?
Larry Kestenbaum (D) for Washtenaw County Clerk and Register of Deeds. The County Clerk administers elections. This is a position we can't afford to ignore in this day and age. Larry has a lot of experience in local politics, having held a variety of minor offices. Plus he is a data and technology maven, the sort of guy that will have a really solid understanding of all the technical issues, able to choose between different polling technologies. I've also got a lot of respect for his personal integrity. He'll do a good job.
