Sidecars and electrical adventures
Sep. 29th, 2013 12:59 amLast night I picked George up are the airport. He was here to buy my BMW sidecar outfit and ride it back to New York. We were up until 3am fiddling with it in the garage to get it ready for his trip. And trying to figure out a cheap way to make the seat taller for him, until he can source the pieces to switch it back to normal seat height. In the end he bought an inflatable donut from the pharmacy section at Meijer, and attached it to the seat.
He did not get an early start this morning. Instead, we went to the motorcycle shop, and to breakfast, at around noon. Me on the Ural and him on the BMW. From there he got on the highway, and I went to the Dexter Mill and bought a lot of tulip bulbs, and chicken wire to protect them from the squirrels. Outside the Dexter Mill I got a lot of UDF and ended up taking some random strangers for joy rides. I think I got some sunburn, standing around out there. It was a lovely day today.
Then in the afternoon I came home and installed light fixtures. (I tire way too fast. This sucks. By the time I had climbed up and down the stool a couple dozen times, and got the two lights installed, I was done in.) But at least now the motion detector lights that made my front porch look like it was wired by Lucas, are gone. Yay!
I was exhausted but I managed to walk up to the corner and get my mail, and on the way home I met the new neighbors two doors down. Bob and Mary tell me they bought that house to spend weekends in, because it is close to their ten grandchildren. They are doing a lot of work to the place - it is pretty run down. The house on the corner is also getting a lot of work. The peeling blue paint is gone; it is now light gray, and there are new windows. I haven't met the new owners yet but they are obviously sinking some money in.
Since I had worn myself out, I spent the next couple hours on the couch reading my book. I was just about to go to bed when my phone rang. It was George. The BMW had broken down. He was on I-80 near Loganton PA (ie the middle of nowhere), and was waiting for the tow truck. He said he would get a motel room if he could, but would I post to the motorcycle list we are both on and see if anyone is in that area and will rescue him. The bike's battery has died, and he has another couple hundred miles to cover tomorrow so he can be at work on Monday. So now I am staying up waiting to play secretary and general facilitator of rescue missions. Hopefully someone from the group can help him.
