My first ADMIN post

elizillaI was recently made an admin on the Sabmag list. I objected to this, said I didn't want the job, but I didn't object strongly enough. Phil said he didn't want anyone doing this job who wanted it, that my very reluctance made me a perfect candidate. Sigh. Responsibility keeps finding me.
This evening I made my first ADMIN announcement. Some new guy came on talking trash. The list has a culture that doesn't tolerate bragging from newcomers, so people started needling this guy. Slowly the heat was turned up, and insults started flying. The keyboard racing started getting out of hand.
One of the goals is to keep the list relatively low volume and high quality, so I put on my admin hat and told them that's enough, settle down, go ride. So far so good. I haven't had to nopost anyone for continuing the public sniping, and no one's beating me up offlist for it. A few people have written offlist to thank me. Maybe this won't be as bad as I thought.
Though I must admit I would have liked to needle the new guy myself. Not as an admin, just speaking for myself alone. He really did have it coming and it would have been fun to join the pile-on. But I have to be good since I'm an admin. Pity some of the others had already overreacted, gone too far, and taken it to a point where it was time to put a stop to it.

Date: 2004-08-31 04:38 am (UTC)i don't admin the ldr list anymore; at times it was really fun, but at other times, it's a really thankless job. thankfully, joe and tom didn't really need me, anyhow. :-)
