I heard an interview with the author on public radio last week, and she sounded interesting. I was in the mood for something light, so I picked up the first Sookie Stackhouse book. Gah. How can something this awful get so much attention? It seems like it would at least have some flow and some style, but it's awkward and just plain terrible.

The actual technique of stringing words together so that they are easily digested aside, I had the idea, from my own reading of the first book, that it is intended to convey a sense of personal-embarrassment/discomfort-for-effect. I liken this to how I perceive some famous comedians who play on observations of and/or presentations of the same sort of thing. I think that Bob Newhart, Ellen Degeneris, and Jerry Seinfeld are examples of this. Sometimes, they also get a bunch effect out of resolution of the problem. Anyhow, that's my vague impression, based on recollection of long-ago reading.

The books are terrible and campy. ;) The show made it big because of the hot guys and gratuitous sex. Give Season 1 a shot.

Good and bad news. Bad news because I was tempted to read at least one of those. Good that you warned me before I wasted my time.
