Horseless Carriages
Sep. 6th, 2019 08:10 pmYesterday the Horseless Carriage Club of America had a run from Dearborn to Lansing. They stopped for lunch in Dexter, just like last year. Once again we had a Stanley Steamer in the driveway, not just for water but for repairs - the driver had to crawl underneath and install a new piece of hose. A reporter for Auto Week came by, and then as the cars were leaving a TV crew showed up as well. Our house may have been in the background on the local news last night, but I didn't look for it.
We had plenty of extra visitors for the occasion. George, a friend from NYC, joined us. He was buying a BMW GS from a seller in Michigan and when we told him about the old cars he timed his visit to coincide. As did the guy selling the motorcycle. Uncle Lanny and Aunt Linda drove over from where they live near Kalamazoo, because Lanny is into cars. And Tom came out in his E-type Jag convertible, just to represent modern cars - the 60s are modern, right?
I couldn't get the day off work but I took a long lunch. Which I paid for - I worked super late last night since all hell broke loose at work. And today at work was more of the same.
My parents came over a little after the cars left, for some iPad advice. My dad struggles; the theory of the world wide web, URLs, and tabbed browsing escape him, and also, what is the difference between an app and a browser? Why is Safari more like Internet Explorer than like a banking app? And so on. He continues to struggle with how to push the home button lightly and quickly enough to avoid bringing up Siri, but he's at least figured out that when Siri comes up, he can just push the button again, try a second time. But he's ahead of my mom, who thinks the iPad is a new thing never before seen, every time she lays eyes on it.
