Took it apart yesterday. It came apart pretty easily, far easier than I expected. It was immediately obvious what the trouble was. My magnet pulled eight little bearing balls out, they were just rattling around in there loose. The brass cage that should have held them was nowhere to be found - that would explain the gold sheen of the transmission oil. The washers on either side of where the bearing balls should be, were collapsed together and rattling. And the end of the rod that goes through the clutch, was deformed.

The local Ural dealer was working late and was happy to have me drive up and get the parts, which he had in stock. They are installed and I just came back from riding around. The clutch works better than it ever has since I have owned the bike.
