Took it apart yesterday. It came apart pretty easily, far easier than I expected. It was immediately obvious what the trouble was. My magnet pulled eight little bearing balls out, they were just rattling around in there loose. The brass cage that should have held them was nowhere to be found - that would explain the gold sheen of the transmission oil. The washers on either side of where the bearing balls should be, were collapsed together and rattling. And the end of the rod that goes through the clutch, was deformed.

The local Ural dealer was working late and was happy to have me drive up and get the parts, which he had in stock. They are installed and I just came back from riding around. The clutch works better than it ever has since I have owned the bike.

Here are some parts. The top row is the stuff I replaced, and the bottom row is the whole assembly that came out of the bike. There's nothing here for scale, but the bearing is about the same diameter as a penny - very small. The arrows point to the part of the rod that is deformed on the old part.

I hope it isn't too creepy to point out that a woman who can replace her own throwout bearing is dead sexy.

Once again I bow to the excellence that is TLK! I'd be might spooked to even try to tear into a clutch.
