Clothes-switch day dropped at schools

Published November 17, 2004

SPURGER, TEXAS -- A homecoming tradition in which boys dress like girls and
vice versa in this tiny Texas school district won't be held Wednesday after
a parent complained.

As a substitute, the schools ranging from elementary to senior high decided
to hold "Camo Day"--with participants wearing black boots and Army
camouflage.

The clothes-switch tradition, hosted by Spurger schools for years, was to
give students a chance to reverse roles and let older girls invite boys on
dates, open doors and pay for sodas.

Plano-based Liberty Legal Institute issued a news release Tuesday reporting
that it "came to the aid of a concerned parent" over an "official
cross-dressing day" in the school district, 150 miles northeast of Houston.

This pisses me off. How come the religious right gets their ideology kowtowed to, while parents who would not let their children play with war toys have to send their kids off to camo day? If I wrap all my knee-jerk prejudices in a flag and call them "faith", can I be an asshole too? Grrr.

It seems to me the religious right should be glad they have a day where they make fun of cross dressers. The hilarity that ensues would reinforce the social norm against cross-dressing. Cross-dressing day is a day for het kids to reinforce the idea that cross dressing is comical; it's not at all subversive. Sheesh.
