I do have a WinXP license; the numbers are on a sticker on this laptop. And I do own an install CD, I just can't find the darn thing. I want to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the OS, before I turn this laptop over to someone else. Yes, I could simply uninstall things that aren't needed, and delete things from the hard drive. But formatting and reinstalling is a more thorough way to avoid inadvertently leaving my own data on it, it leaves the new owner free to make their own virus scanner choices, and should make it run faster for them.

Yes, I know, I know, I could install linux on it. But that's not what this person needs.

If you have a license number on a sticker, just download a torrent of XP. It's perfectly legal if you have a license.

XP install disc torrents are not nearly as common as they used to be.

I wonder what passes as a decent quality secure HD erase tool these days?

Re: Torrents

Also, with the new ISP legislation in place, it only takes any vendor and automated whine and your ISP can toss you to the curb. You then can spend a very long time trying to get your service back or service from another ISP after they see the black mark.
