They dug up the other half of the square they had outlined with their saws, and put smooth asphalt over both sides. I still don't understand what purpose this served, but the street is now quiet.
Reminds me of the old joke about the guy who's stuck in traffic that's obviously related to road construction. Finally he gets to the head of the line, and is able to see what's going on. There's a guy who's digging a hole about the size of a five-gallon bucket every 20 yards along the side of the road. Behind him, about 50 yards back, is another guy who fills the hole back in.
"Hey," he says. "Out of idle curiosity, what *are* you guys doing out here?" he asks the lead guy. "Oh," says the guy who's digging the holes. "We're the tree-planting crew, and the guy who puts the tree in the hole called out sick today."
