Break down
Sep. 9th, 2012 06:04 pmYou knew it had to happen - they are notorious for it after all. The Ural has broken down. I am at Joey T's.
The problem is almost certainly the clutch throwout bearing. There's a 110 post thread about this over on Soviet Steeds. The fix looks to be well beyond what I'd want to do on the side of the road, but it doesn't look overwhelmingly difficult. However the bearing is very obscure. People are reporting that the Ural factory part is $100. You can get an equivalent generic for $50 but it's obscure enough that it takes four to six weeks to arrive - perhaps the bearing company has to make it special? I don't know. Anyway, it's pretty clear that I can't get the part on a Sunday evening in Albany NY. And by the time I traveled home for work on Tuesday, acquired parts, and came back it would cost me as much as the rental truck would. So, it's coming home in a truck.
