Bees in the basement
Aug. 16th, 2012 03:38 pmTwo weeks ago we started to see a lot of dead and dying bees in the basement. Today I had the exterminator out. Turns out they are yellow jackets and we have an extremely active nest in the wall next to the chimney. Which they sprayed but good.
The exterminator says it will take 4 to 7 days for the activity to die down. We should stay out of the basement for the rest of the day because they may be invading the basement in greater numbers today. In a couple days I can go down there with the shop vac and clean up. We should not close the entrances to the nest, though, until next spring. Because even with the queen gone, eggs are going to keep hatching in there, and they won't die immediately - they will need to get out. If we close the hole, they'll all come into the basement.
