Of course not. People who have enough money to make good, don't borrow cars, because they have their own.
I don't expect it will be very expensive, at least. The bumper has been pulled loose in the corner. It doesn't appear to be truly damaged, except for the fastener that holds it in place. She didn't know when it happened. Looks like it got caught on something. Maybe someone hit the corner of the car with a shopping cart. But I will need to get it dealt with before she borrows it again, because she's not going to have the faintest idea how to deal with it, and if she keeps driving it around like that it will get worse.
This. Or stop lending it out in general. "Sorry, lent my car out and it kept coming back broken...I've decided I can't lend it out any more, because I'm worried about the next accident involving more than just damage to the car itself."
Seriously, lending someone your car is potentially a bottomless pit of liability. You'd better be really trusting of them.
She's not unique. A number of people have borrowed my vehicles and damaged them, over the years. It's more common than not. Perhaps it's because they are out of their routines? People are always so upset when they do it, I don't think it's that they don't care.
The body shop thinks she probably ran the nose of the car over a parking block, and then when she backed up it pulled the bumper off that side. They are guessing it'll be $75 to $100 to take the bumper off, fix whatever is wrong with the fasteners, and put it back on. The estimator made jokes about "driving by feel".
Perhaps you should lend people the sidehack instead? It's not that they won't damage it, but at least they'll probably damage themselves in the process, which might count as a form of justice...
That's pretty cheap. I did the same thing to my Subaru earlier this year and they quoted me $800 to repair the bumper. I paid them $200 to put the existing one back on, figured out that the fasteners were mostly fine, and left it alone.
Sucks to have to do the fixing though. I hope your friend pays for the damage.
Urf. I used to be the lender of cars (and bikes and other things), too. It hasn't come up in awhile, so I might still be that guy, but I definitely feel the burn of being generous and receiving damage in exchange. It really blows, and chips away at an already flagging faith in humanity.
Sorry it's happening to you, and I hope your borrower is appreciative of your efforts and the negative impact of this situation.
That is my goal. It's hard when people have these sob stories that you really do believe, and everyone knows I don't need the car in summer. I think next year I will put it in storage.
