Voice mail and me
Apr. 6th, 2012 03:27 pmThis is a general message, not aimed at any specific individual. But I just discovered four voice mails that were up to two weeks old, in my phone.
Voice mail is not a fast or reliable way to contact me. I will almost always see an email far more quickly.
I don't keep my phone on my person at all times. Instead I do things like leave it in my motorcycle top case. Or I leave it in a pocket and launder it and I don't even notice it's missing for a couple of days. Or you call me while I am at work and already on the phone for my job, so I stuff it in the desk drawer to make it quiet, and I forget about it until the battery goes dead and I suddenly wonder where it is?
And when you leave me voice mail it doesn't always notify me. I would be more upset about that but frankly I'm just not that attached to voice mail as a communication method. I don't use it very much so I don't check it regularly, which means it may be days or weeks before I listen to a voice mail.
I tend to be oblivious to texts, too - it may be months before something takes me into that screen and I randomly notice you sent one. It's not a communication method I use very often, so it's not part of my routine.
So please, send me email. People who have my phone number also have my email address.
And if you did leave me voice mail, and I haven't responded, and for some reason email just won't do, try calling me again! Maybe I'll pick up. Or maybe the second voice mail will make my phone chirp at me, and I'll get all your voice mails at once.

Date: 2012-04-06 09:19 pm (UTC)Email me. Don't voicemail. Don't text.
Of course, if you need to reach me *today* because of something you need *today*, if it's not a work day I might not get the email if I've already left home. This is just a fact of life, that if I'm not home or at work, I'm not necessarily going to be plugged into an internet device. Sometimes (though rarely), I am doing something else.
