eReader update
Apr. 14th, 2011 02:16 pmSo here I am, almost six month into life with eReaders. I was just re-reading what I posted back in November, when I was having such trouble. Well, I now have everything working well. But I went through serious thrash to get here, and I'll be going through the thrash again - I have ordered a new PC. The new box will have Win7 64-bit (my current machine is WinXP 32-bit), so I'll have to figure out how to set everything set up again. Maybe I will be able to describe it more coherently after round 2. :) It seems to me that the root of most of this thrash, is DRM. Peel it off, and everything else becomes easy. And it's not like I've downloaded any pirated books, or uploaded any content for others to pirate. It's just that the sellers have erected this immense technical barrier to keep their customers from giving them money without cleaving unto them and forsaking all others - and I don't want to marry Amazon or B&N, I just want to date them!
In November I had just gotten the Sony PRS-650. In February I picked up a second device, a PRS-350, which is exactly like the 650 except smaller and comes in a color that is officially called pink, but which looks purple to me. It was on sale at the Sony store and they were giving trade-ins for old electronics. I sent them some old MP3 players that I hadn't used in years, and got enough discounts that I could no longer resist the allure of small and purple. :)
Then last week I found another great deal on a Nook wi-fi refurb, so I now have a third device, and one that's quite different. I'm going to try to read on it for the next few weeks, and see if I like it once I am used to it. Right now I'm just reminding myself to give it time, so I can learn to appreciate its strengths, instead of just noticing what is not-Sony about it. I'll post once I have more feel for it.
Maybe eventually I'll get one of the all-LCD readers, that blur into tablets. But they're expensive enough that it'll probably take a while for one to come along at a price I can't walk away from.
I have managed to not buy any more paper books since I got the first reader. We'll see how long I can keep this up.

Now I, too, am comparing them. :)

We shall overcome. (where's a music note character when you need it?)
I keep looking at your de-DRM instructions and shaking my head. I want to but can't seem to stir up the energy to start.

Date: 2011-04-16 10:52 am (UTC)The only thing I've been annoyed with is the cover it came with. I think I want to get a simple slip-case for it. My hands are big enough that if I take the Nook out of its cover, I can just hold it up in one hand. I still have to use the other hand to turn the page, but that's hardly a trial.
I do wish it supported a "landscape" mode, for those of us who should probably get bifocals. I'd like to zoom the text one more step, but when I do that, there's only two or three words on a line--it's tough to read that way.
I guess what I really want is something with eInk and a roll-up screen, that's tabloid-sized. Or, I should look into getting the scarring on my one cornea lazed off. Am I babbling? I'm babbling. The Adderall is kicking in. Time to eat and get dressed.
