Apr. 14th, 2004 11:46 pmLively day here today. We've hired a contractor to put up vinyl/aluminum trim and gutters on our house, so we won't have to paint. They worked on it all day yesterday, and when Michael got home he observed they were doing a really crappy job. (I hadn't checked it out, because I hadn't been outside myself.) I came out to see and it did indeed look terrible.
So this morning Michael chewed them out and made them rip it down and redo it. The guy who was in charge went off to get materials while the other guy stayed here to start tearing the shoddy stuff down. About half an hour later the guy who had stayed here rang the doorbell. He had fallen off his ladder and hurt his arm, and got some awful scratches on his face. The arm was swelling rapidly. I made him come in and sit on the couch, and let him use our phone to call his boss. I got him a cloth and some alcohol to clean the scratches on his face, and an ice pack for the arm. After he talked to his boss, Michael took him to the emergency room.
Then I came back upstairs, tried to work, and discovered that my phone was hosed. No one could hear me when I spoke on either of my land lines, using any of the telephones I have here, on any call that routed through my office's phone system. My cell phone worked fine, and land line calls that did not go through the office phone system worked fine. I spent over an hour troubleshooting this problem, and couldn't get things working with my land lines, so all day I made work calls on my personal cell phone.
During this process, some user got my cell phone number off her caller ID, and she called me back at 9:30 this evening wanting me to work on her case. Um, no! If they want after hours support that is a billable service and there is someone who is paid to wear a pager and take those calls.
Two good things did happen this evening:
It was beautifully warm here, so I got to wear my perforated Vansons to ride downtown and hang out with the motorcyclists the way we always do on Wednesdays. I was only a little cold.
When I got home I was starving, and Michael had ordered me some chinese food even though he didn't know when I'd be in or if I would want it. It was still warm and very tasty. Michael is so good to me!

Date: 2004-04-15 04:35 pm (UTC)Interesting you should mention that. Yesterday someone was having trouble connecting to large call-centers she was calling (banking related). If she used her cell phone it worked out fine.
It's very possible that some phone switching/routing system in Ann Arbor was having trouble.
