I bet I saw a lot less traffic, and fewer potholes, since I didn't visit PA or NY and I didn't get within 100 miles of the east coast megalopolis. But you probably didn't have to cross any areas where the roads went straight and flat all the way to the horizon.
You'd be surprised -- the roads outside of MA are surprisingly free of potholes. MA DPW is doing something very, very wrong. Roads in NY and PA are gorgeous.
And yeah, we mostly stayed off interstates and on the twisties, except through Maryland -- I don't think we ever touched foot to tarmac in Maryland...
Last time I rode in PA and NY, every road I tried was as awful as Michigan. Ohio has always been spotty, with some roads excellent and others awful, but in the last year they'd gone nuts with the paving and it's looking pretty spiffy. Perhaps NY and PA have done the same.
As for staying off interstates and on twisties? That only works if the surface streets are twisties. Most of the surface streets within a couple hours of my house, are on a grid. When I'm picking roads off the map, I just look for the ones that aren't on the grid, because you have slightly more chance of finding curves on a road that follows some geographical feature, instead of a surveyor's line.
