Monitor and camera fail
May. 21st, 2009 09:22 amMy new big flat panel monitor died yesterday. It goes black, then comes up with stripes, and won't switch off unless I unplug it. Then I can turn it on again, but fifteen minutes later it does it again. Almost like it's overheating. I checked the vents and they are not blocked or full of cat hair. Dunno what else I can troubleshoot, here. I checked my LJ, and I just got it last November. I'm back to using my older, smaller one. I wonder if there's any warranty I can claim on? I will have to see if I can dig up the paperwork for it.
Not a good week for electronics. My digital camera died on Sunday. No matter how many times I power cycle it, remove the battery, etc, it just says "SYSTEM ERROR" and it won't retract the lens or do anything.
I suppose that prices will have come down on both these items, especially the camera since it was pretty old. But still, grr.
Edited 1:44pm: Can't find monitor receipt. Found manual and warranty brochure. It has a three year warranty, and if I don't have a receipt they use the date of manufacture. Hopefully it wasn't sitting in a warehouse for three years before I bought it. Acer website seems mainly focused on supporting laptops, not monitors, so their search tools mostly kick up useless stuff. Submitted a request to their tech support. We'll see how long it takes to hear from them, and whether they are helpful.
Edited 4:54pm: Acer says my serial number doesn't exist and they will close my case unless I fax them a receipt. Called Staples and chose option 5 on their phone triage, the "none of the above" option. I was immediately transferred to a pleasant and helpful woman in Halifax who told me that they CAN provide me a duplicate receipt, based on the info I can provide (I knew the date and store and dollar amount from my credit card statement, plus I had the box with its UPC code.) However their records are stored on paper, not in a computer, so they will need to dig it up and either fax or mail it to me. If Acer doesn't fix me up and I have to get a new monitor, I know what retailer I am buying it from.
