Spammed by a friend

I just got spammed by someone I know. It was classic spam; not a clever joke playing at being spam. Just the usual spammy garbage. The headers show it was sent to everyone in his address book, and even if it is some kind of joke, I know he knows better than to send jokes to his whole address book. It came out of his gmail account.
I'm sure he did not send it, and that he's been hacked. I suppose it had to happen; the spam filtering has gotten so good that merely using botnets to send it out doesn't work anymore. They have to evade the whitelisting somehow, and every machine in the botnet has an email user with an address book already right there, why not steal it as long as they're in the machine anyway?
The person whose account spammed me, is here on LJ, but I'm withholding their name to shield them from embarrassment. If you wonder whether it's you, check your LJ private messaging - I sent you a note there, since your email is obviously compromised. Though if it's you, you probably already know about it and you have my sympathy for the flames you are probably getting from people who don't realize you would not do this on purpose.

Date: 2008-11-26 04:29 pm (UTC)A couple weeks ago I got hundreds and hundreds of flames from people who said my primary email address had spammed them. I posted about it here, remember? I could not find any evidence that my machine was compromised. I think some spammer just spoofed my address. The people flaming me were being idiots. Why would I follow their example?
