Jan. 14th, 2021 12:35 amMy dad’s brother who came down with Covid at lunch, has been fighting cancer for a while. Pretty successfully. He has done better than expected but it is still terminal and he has been saying he is ready to stop the cancer treatments. The Covid hit him hard, his oxy sat went down to 70 and my aunt called an ambulance. But he has bounced back enough that he came home from the hospital yesterday. He is tied to an oxygen tank but doing well, all things considered. My dad says he says Covid is no joke and not to catch it.
Anyway, my parents are so far not sick, except for the usual. My dad has uncontrolled diabetes and chronic asthma. My mom has dementia but is strong as a horse. Since my mom is not suffering any symptoms, and can’t remember anything for even five minutes, she isn’t very cooperative. And my dad doesn’t have the strength (or the social skills) to control the situation.
And yes, she still drives. I am 90 miles away and can’t stop her driving without my dad’s cooperation, and he is hopeless. I have tattled to the Secretary of State (Michigan’s name for the DMV) but the authorities are a bit preoccupied, sigh.
I made some calls to see if there is some kind of Covid rehab we could check her into for a couple weeks, where they could help her quarantine. But no one takes people like this. Memory care won’t take Covid positive people and hospital have their hands full with people who are actually sick.
So I have set up the WiFi garage doors to buzz me every time the garage door opens. Then I call her and try to persuade her to turn around. It happened three times today. Twice I got her to go home, but the third time she did not take her phone. But hey, stopping two trips out of three is better than none.
Any authorities who might step in, are overwhelmed. No one but me is going to chase a cheerfully confused older lady even if she is at the grocery store buying things she doesn’t even need, three days after a positive Covid test. What could anyone do? Fine her? She can’t learn from fines because she can’t learn, period. Jail her? The jails don’t need any more Covid.
Wear your masks, people. My mom may be in the checkout line behind you.
