I'm a research subject
Feb. 9th, 2015 04:23 pmI went to the doctor today for this ongoing terrible cough and laryngitis. They prescribed me an antibiotic and a cough suppressant. I'm not convinced this is useful but since they are prescribed I will take them. We'll see how it goes.
Then they asked me if I would consent to be in a study. They have a young woman there in their office, who apparently just interviews people who might have the flu, all day long, for the study. She wanted to swab my nose and mouth for samples, and I would be paid ten dollars for this, and another ten dollars if I take a followup survey in one week. OK. The paperwork says they're collecting data for ten thousand patients. I wonder how many of these research assistants are sitting in large primary care clinics all day, trying to meet their quotas, and how this is going for them? She told me this office is finding plenty of people for her to talk to.
