Moving story
Jun. 10th, 2013 11:11 pmSo on Friday May 31, I closed on my house, with possession on close. The seller had a tough time getting all their stuff out before close. A very tough time. As in, her partner had a heart attack while working on it on Friday morning, and they had to drop everything and go to hospital. So when I closed, they still had a ton of stuff in the garage. They have since removed it, mostly.
I hired movers, who came on Tuesday. I spent Friday through Monday cleaning the new house and packing at the old house. The movers were able to take everything out of the old place, load on a truck, drive the 20 miles to the new place, and unload the truck placing everything in the room I wanted it in, in just 3.5 hours. Amazing!
I am continuing to have foot trouble, and I stumble when trying to carry things up and down steps, so I have had to depend on others to tote things around for me. I feel silly to be so helpless but all my friends have been very kind.
I moved my home office stuff in the Subaru, right after close. I was expecting to have internet (DSL) in the new house by Friday, because that's what I had arranged with AT&T. But I didn't have time to actually try it until Tuesday. At which point I learned that it did not work. I determined that there was no dial tone even when I plugged my phone into the box outside, so I called AT&T. They couldn't send a repairman until Thursday. The repairman quickly confirmed that I was right, there is nothing at the box coming into the house, and therefore it's on them, not me. He wandered off down the street somewhere and a half hour later I had dial tone. The internet then worked, but only one PC at a time - the router didn't work. Also, my personal PC had issues. I knew this already - it started making the noise a couple weeks ago but I didn't do anything about it because my hands were already full. The noise was easier to ignore, with my PC in the basement and the monitor cable coming up through a hole in the floor. With the PC in the room it was unbearable. Well, today,
pi3832 fixed the noise, and another friend, Curt, fixed my router. So now I have internet, and a PC that doesn't make my tired head ache. There is still a ton of static on the land line - I will probably have to call AT&T and bitch some more. But at least the speeds seem fine for my purposes. And it's a whole lot cheaper than Comcast.
I was event organizer for a Sabmag event in Marietta OH last weekend. I'd have canceled, except I was the organizer so it seemed wrong to just blow it off. I ended up driving down there in my car, because my foot is getting worse and I was exhausted. So I went straight from my move, to a long car trip.
Today was my first day working in my new home office. I think it will work out well. I got a new table from Ikea that is desk sized and has height adjustable legs so I can set my keyboard at a comfortable height, and I have plenty of room to roll my chair around. I am slowly getting boxes emptied, figuring out where my things are, and assigning them new spots. As I regain control over my things, I feel less discombobulated, so maybe soon I will be calm enough to return to my regularly scheduled too-much-internet. But for now I am still pretty fidgety and my online life will continue to suffer. :-)
