Nov. 24th, 2004 11:08 pmSo, once again Thanksgiving is here and I have failed to get any Christmas shopping done early. Every year I venture forth into the fray, trying to find something for Michael, who is hard to shop for, and every year I swear I will do this earlier next year, because I hate the crowds.
Michael is sitting there across from me right now, banging away at something on his PC. His PC is in pretty bad shape. The hard drive died and he had to replace it. The CD drive stopped working and he has been using my portable CD burner, plugged in to his USB port, to do things that require CDs. There's something horribly wrong with one of the fans that causes it to squeal or buzz intermittently, but he figured out a fix for this: If he turns the PC upside down, the noise stops. He's running Windows 98! This is a guy who likes to play computer games, and his PC is absolute junk.
So I am thinking of buying him a new computer for Christmas. And no more low-rent brands, either. I'm tired of watching him deal with this cheap eMachines PC that is falling apart in front of our eyes. I'm only looking at higher quality brands. Fortunately he's not a cutting edge kind of gamer; he doesn't need the most powerful bleeding edge spendy computer. I can get him something much better than what he has, without breaking the bank.
So far I have looked at Dell and at Alienware. Who else should I look at? What other manufacturers have good reputations for quality? Anyone have a suggestion?
Note this is marked Friends only because while Michael doesn't have a LJ account, he does read LJ sometimes, and if I buy him a PC I want it to be a surprise.
