Friday the cats saw the vet. This time, the vet came to us. I found this vet who makes house calls, and I thought it would be nice to spare the cats all the trauma of the ride in the car. This vet turned out to be OK but not great. He did not have anything set up to weigh the cats, and he did not have an assistant so I had to help him hold the cats down for their blood draws. It was hard to hold the cats down! This is something where a practiced and emotionally detached vet assistant could have made things much less difficult. Oh well. I suppose even with all the struggle, it was less frightening for the cats than riding in the car and sitting in the vet's waiting room.

Friday night Michael and I went out to Bombadill's cafe. Pete wasn't there but the cafe seemed to be doing a good and steady business. We walked in the door and Michael was immediately recognized by a woman at a table near the front, it was one of his coworkers. Then he found someone else he knew sitting at the back, the wife of one of his gaming buddies. How cheery, to just walk in and find people you know. Michael thought it looked like a good place to bring his gaming group, too, except they're not open late enough; they close at 10 and Michael's gamers usually run until 11 or 11:30. Maybe eventually Pete will extend his hours.

Saturday I went to the memorial service for Iain. It was packed, with over 100 people. Not enough chairs to go around. They had a lot of photos of Iain. They were fascinating yet hard to look at. It was nice hearing everyone get up to share their memories of Iain. Unfortunately they also had one of those awful ministers who start by saying "I never knew him but..." and finish with silly religious platitiudes. Iain wouldn't have liked that, but it was a small thing and maybe it made his father feel better to observe the traditional forms.

After the service, Mary Ellyn (Iain's mom) asked me back to her hotel where she was having a smaller, more wake-like gathering. It was much more the sort of thing Iain would have liked, intimate and supportive. I collected Mary Ellyn's contact info and I will definitely go see her.

The other thing that happened this weekend, was that a car got stolen right out of my neighbor's driveway, sometime between 7am and 8am Saturday morning. It was a 99 Neon, the 16 year old daughter's car. Who steals a five year old Neon when there are many newer and nicer cars parked outside on the same block? Crazy! So today I gave the 16 year old a lesson in driving stick shift. If she can learn it well enough I will let her drive the Mazda, while they figure out things with the insurance and whatnot, and get her another car.
