This evening I went up to the local Chinese takeout for dinner. I am one of their regular customers. They have seen me there with every vehicle I own, including the bikes. And just like Tios, they know what I will order before I get in the door.
Tonight I was there in my truck. When I pulled up I saw Peter, the owner, and Scott, the delivery driver, standing behind Peter's SUV, which had the tail hatch wide open. As soon as Peter spotted me he started waving, and Jenny must have spotted me too because she came darting out. They wanted me to see what was in the SUV.
Turns out that Peter has purchased a tiny little sportbike. It's bigger than a pocket bike, more like the size of a small dirtbike, but it has sporty looking tread pattern on the tires, and smallish cast wheels. I didn't see any manufacturer's label. It's got flimsy looking red and white plastic bodywork in a sportbike style, teeny tiny front and rear disc brakes (discs about the size and thickness of CDs), tiny upswept underseat exhaust with a single bright chrome muffler about the size of a coke can, and a 49cc two stroke motor with a pull cord to start it. I suppose it will license as a moped.
Peter says it has a top speed of 40 mph and he needs to buy oil to mix with the gasoline, and did I know where he might get it? I suggested the auto part store on the corner. Peter and Scott spoke in rapid Chinese, and then Peter departed.
I went inside to get my food, and Jenny told me that Peter has been looking forward to picking up this bike all week, and Scott was even more excited than Peter. She says Scott normally works from 5pm to close, while Peter drives delivery during the day, but today, Scott came in at 1pm and told Peter he was going to cover for him so he could go get the bike early. She said that while Peter was out getting the bike, he called her from his cell phone and asked where he could get "cycle oil" and she thought he had said "recycle oil" and she suggested he could use the used fry grease from the restaurant, but then he explained it was for the bike.
Peter's other hobby is collecting Coke memorabilia, and Jenny says he's going to put Coke stickers on the bike. He chose the red and white because it will match.
Scott didn't say much; he has hardly any English, but he was bouncing off the walls waiting for Peter to return, and grinning ear to ear. I wonder when he'll get one of these bikes?
As I was on my way home with my food, I spotted Peter's SUV parked outside the auto parts store. Maybe when I finish eating I'll go back down there and see how the riding is going.
Of course now I have to worry a bit. I wonder if Peter has a helmet? Has he ever ridden a motorcycle? I hope he realizes that if he puts this bike on its side in the SUV after he has gas in the tank, it may well leak.
